Music Fix with Pogo: Fiery Furnaces

Music Fix With Pogo: Oak Park's brother/sister combo The Fiery Furnaces return home for a very special gig on Saturday at the Lakeshore Theatre. Special because not only will they presumably feature tracks from their newest album 'Widow City', or from 2005's 'Rehearsing My Choir' (featuring a collaboration with, and vocals by the duo's then-83 year old grandmother), or anything else from their illustrious and complex repertoire...but also because they will indeed be featuring new songs written as a result of their recent "Democ-Rock Tour".
On this 21-date tour, a giant ballot box was situated at the front of the stage, and audience members were commissioned with loading it with bits and scraps of paper from their pockets, wallets, purses, backpacks, and so on. ATM receipts, reminders scribbled on a Post-It Note, the phone number of that girl that you were never really going to call anyway...anything was accepted and encouraged.
From these bits of people's lives, then, came lyrics for new songs. The objective, was for the people who were attending these "caucuses" to have the details of their life, become the soundtrack of their life, in the form of the next Furnaces record. Who knows, though, if the next album (which I've heard might come this year) will consist completely of songs written from the ballot box scraps, or just partially so. But either way, I'm quite excited for this show to hear how some of them ended up...and if nothing else, this special night at the Lakeshore is another opportunity to see one of the most engaging and evolving acts in the entire indie world, who also happen to be a Chicagoland export.
Show time is 10pm, tickets are $20. For more information check out The Lakeshore Theater's Website
And in a more or less unrelated note, the last time I interviewed the siblings, was at the 2005 Iceland Airwaves Festival. This made me think of the song "Tropical Iceland" from their '05 record called 'EP', which is now more or less looked at as a landmark indie release for the decade. Here's the video for it:
